Is there a new Star Wars Trilogy on the way? Well if the latest batch of internet rumors are anything to go by then … well yes apparently this could be happening.

Lucasfilm have denied the claims so far, not that comments from studios holds much word these days, but if true we could be seeing three new films all set within the movie mythos but not focusing on the Skywalker clan, no mention on whether it includes connected characters like Han, Lando or Obi Wan.

The rumours thus far are saying that George Lucas will self finance the movies with the profits he hopes to make with the 3D conversions of Star Wars: Episodes I-VI planned for next year. Which I can’t wait for by the way. Do I want to see the old original trilogy in 3d? No not particularly, but I have always wanted to see them at the cinema … at the very least to make up for seeing Episodes I-III on the big screen <shudder>.

The original source also reports that the movie won’t tie in anyway to the TV series that is currently in production… good news on that front, but some concern has been raised over where exactly these new movies would fit.

Where would this new trilogy fit? The Clone Wars have been incredibly popular through the animated series’s, but concern that this new trilogy would just turn out like Episode II is a scary possibility. The source claims it will be a total sequel,

““It’s not for certain if they will be the long-awaited Episodes 7, 8 and 9 but could instead be Episodes 10, 11 and 12 or possibly even further out in the Star Wars timeline. And by giving space in the timeline, possibly even as far as 100 years or 1,000 years in the Star Wars universe future, Lucas avoids having to make these stories ‘fit in’ with what the previous stories have told.”

If it slotted after Return Of The Jedi would it do away with the story and continuity built by the various animated series, books and comics? Maybe.

My real concern is whether I would want to see anything with Han Solo in, because let’s all be honest for a second and take a good hard look and a think – would you honestly like to see anyone other then Harison Ford taking the role of Solo? No neither would I.

Again sure it would be cool because it’s Star Wars but… really? The best parts of Star Wars just can’t be recreated today for whatever reason. Is it due to the advancement in CG, giving too much scope and room to lean into well worn territory? The incredibly different film landscape could be enough of a reason for this not to happen, films made back when watch so differently then films made today.

Would we get the cheesy one liners? The oddly endearing conversations between all the characters and the all encompassing tone and energy that the original trilogy still gives off ? No, things are different now (for whatever reason) and chances are it would just end up being another Episode I-III, with bigger set pieces and super awkward character moments.

If I hear one more thing about mediclorians I will ram my face into the floor.

Speaking to Wired magazine Lucasfilm had this to say,

“George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now – including plenty of Star Wars projects – but there are no new feature films planned.”

All I can say is it’s going to be an interesting year or so for the Galaxy Far Far Away.
